What do I need while travelling?

It is important to make sure that you are prepared when you go travelling, as forgetting something can make your experience dramatically worse, or can even mean that you can’t go where you want to! Here is a list of the most important things to take with you when you are travelling that you might have not thought about.

Passport

Unless you are travelling within your own country, you aren’t going to get anywhere without your passport so make sure that you know exactly where it is at all times and that you keep it in a safe, water-proof zip-lock bag to make sure that it isn’t damaged when transporting it. It can also be helpful to have photocopies of your passport in case it is lost or stolen as these can make it easier for authorities to help you.

Credit / Debit Card

I always say your passport and credit or debit card are the two most important things that you can take travelling, as in the very unlikely event that you forget everything else then you can still get where you need to go and buy anything that you need and find somewhere to stay.

Backpack

Since this is where you will be keeping all of your possessions, getting the best backpack for your needs is very important and a good backpack can save you from a lot of shoulder and back pain if you need to carry a lot of stuff with out while you are travelling. Backpack Reviewer have some good lists of backpacks for whatever your needs are including short trips and hiking if that is your thing.

Ear Plugs

Maybe you are one of those lucky people that can fall asleep stood up in the middle of a rock concert, but if not you need to get some decent earplugs. Howard Leight are a good brand that I have been using for years and have saved me from sleep deprivation on many flights and hostel stays.

Visas

It’s amazing how many people put lots of effort into planning their trips and then completely forget about visas. Check if you need a visa to travel to a country and then get it sorted out far in advance as you can to prevent any unpleasant surprises when you reach the border.

A phone and SIM card that works globally

Many people expect their phone to work anywhere, but for many people in the US this is often not the case as US phone networks are different to other networks in the world. Make sure that you check your phone will operate in whichever country or countries that you are planning on visiting.

Medication

If you are taking any prescription medicine, make sure that you take it with you including the prescription. This is especially important if it is a controlled substance as taking controlled medication to another country without a prescription could result in it being confiscated or could even land you in trouble with the authorities.
